Butterflies and Frogs
Raising tadpoles.

I get a lot questions on tadpole care so this may be helpful.
Many people have different ways of raising tadpoles but this is my method.
Tadpoles are very easy to raise with very little work involved. I keep the tadpoles in individual yogurt size pots, preferably glass but not essential. I only feed about twice a week as overfeeding can cause the water to pollute. I put a small piece of Indian Almond /Catappa leaf in each pot. This will make the water a tea colour and is very beneficial for both the water quality, tadpoles health as well as provide food for them as they will eat the microbes that grow on it. These leaves can be purchased in many aquarium shops or online. I use filtered water from the kitchen water filter jug but you can use clean rain water if you prefer. I wouldn’t use tap water at all. +I keep the tadpoles at room temperature between 18c – 24c but not below 17.5
I don’t rush the tadpoles with high temperatures and over feeding as I find rushing them can cause limbs to develop with problems. Every now and then I use a pipette and suck out the bottom dirt and top up with clean filtered water. The Almond leaf and sides of the jar will collect beneficial nitrifying bacteria that helps keep the water quality good. Over feeding is the main cause of the water to go bad.
I use a variety of food including tropical fish mini sinking pellets and algea wafers used for tropical bottom feeding fish. ( Only a very small amount per feeding, maybe one mini pellet or a tiny piece of wafer that’s all). I also use Bug bites and Repashy Soilent green although I think the algae wafers are as good. I alternate these foods so they get the variety. All the foods are available from aquarium shops or online. I highly recommend you visit www.fantasticfrogs.co.uk/
When the tadpoles pop their front legs I reduce the water and stop feeding. I then put the container (tilted) into a grow out tub or vivarium so they can easily climb out when ready. They won’t feed until their tails have completely gone and their mouth has re-developed from a tadpole mouth to a frog mouth.
I have the grow-out container or vivarium ready with Springtails already colonised in it. Some froglets will take Melanogaster fruit flies, but not the larger Hydei at this stage. Flies and springtails should be dusted with vitamins at every feeding.
See pictures below of what supplements I use to dust flies.
I hope this helps and always happy to answer questions
